In conjunction with Middle Park High School, Grand County EMS has been able to offer an EMT-Basic class to high school seniors for the last several years. Seniors from MPHS come to GCEMS to attend class for an hour a day for the entire year. Upon successful completion of the course, students may sit for the NREMT exam to become nationally recognized as an EMT-Basic. GCEMS and MPHS are also able to offer 11-12 graders a one semester internship.

Prehospital Emergency Medicine (One year, 2 credit course) Grade:12

PREREQUISITES: Sports Health and First Aid, Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology recommended. Students must be able to read at the 10th grade level as demonstrated by CSAP or ACT scores. Will consider students who have not taken the prerequisites based upon demonstration desire. Maximum class size is 15 students. If more students apply for the class, students will be prioritized based upon the number of "prerequisites" they have completed. Course will be taught at the Grand County EMS building in downtown Granby. Transportation required.

This is a full year, 4th hour and study hall block course offered at the Grand County EMS building in Granby for seniors only. Instructors are provided by the Grand County EMS services. The course will provide the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to pass the EMT basic certification once the student reaches the age of 18.

This course covers techniques of patient assessment, clinical decision-making and treatment techniques for proper emergency patient care. Included is an introduction to anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, acquiring vital signs, medication administration, splinting, patient movement, incident management, hazardous materials, scene safety, medical illnesses, traumatic injuries and pediatric patient care. The course will include curriculum materials from Emergency Medical Technician - Basic and Outdoor Emergency Care.

Students will have special opportunities to observe in emergency rooms and surgical suites. Students will also be expected to spend some hours on ambulance and ski patrol ride along which require some Friday and Saturday hours.

This course will provide an excellent base for any student interested in a Health Care Career as well as the skills and certifications for entry-level positions. It would also be extremely beneficial information for any outdoor enthusiasts, such as snowmobilers, hikers, rafters, cyclists, who may find themselves in emergency situations a long ways from the nearest medical facility.

Medical Internship (One Semester) Grades: 11-12

PREREQUISITE: Reliable transportation, 1/2 credit prerequisite or concurrent in Sports Medicine classes, instructor approval, immunization record, signed patient confidentiality form. Hepatitis B shots recommended. Internships take place during the school day.

This is a SCHOOL-TO-CAREER internship experience with one or a combination or several health care providers or educational institutions. Students will complete a minimum of 72 hours. Specific goals of this experience are to:

- Understand career opportunities in health care, and comprehend the roles, skills, education and personal characteristics of health care professionals
- Practice professional skills including teamwork, timelines, initiative, attitude, presentation, responsibility, decision-making and problem solving
- Demonstrate job application skills
- Provide students with meaningful work and experience in the health care field
- Assist students in creating a network with community professionals in their field of interest
